Unit 5: Speaking of Gender

 

During this session you will learn:

  • How to avoid sexist language when you speak or write.
  • How to read between the lines. In other words, how to link your background knowledge ( old information), with new knowledge (new information), to draw a conclusion or to create an opinion.
  • How to ask questions in English.
  • How to write an 3-paragraph essay.

Activity 2

A) Writing:

  • Learn about essay writing, at Tips-O-Matic
  • How to outline your ideas to write an essay - Essay Writing
  • Write an essay about the advantages or disadvantages of studying at Kuwait University.

B) Writing & Speaking: (Hands-on)

  • Go to Podomatic
  • Sign up for an account creating your own username and passwrod.
  • Write an essay about the advantages or disadvantages of being a man or a woman in Kuwait / going to Diwania
  • Podcast your article from your Podomatic channel.
  • You could write a radio commercial about your favorite product and then podcast it through your Podomatic channel.
  • See a website with examples of TV commercials

Reading:

The problem of miscommunication between men and women seems to be universal.

Read the following two passages from two books, and then answer the questions, below:

Passage 1: Men from Mars and Women from Venus, by Dr. John Gray. (USA)

Passage 2: Women In Kuwait -The Politics of Gender, by Dr. Haya Al-Mughni. (Kuwait)

Questions:

1.Compare the ideas of the two authors with the main idea included in Unit 5, Reading 1:"Different Ways of Talking", paragraph 9. (To make the comparison, outline the ideas using a table that you can create with Word Processor or any program of your choice.

2. Print out your work and bring it with you tomorrow for our class discussion.
