Week 1
Learning Basic Computer & Internet Skills to Improve Study Skills
During this week you will learn and practice the following skills:
1. Signing up for an e-mail account using Yahoo!Mail or Hotmail.
2. How to use MS Word Program to write your homework assignment, and save it on your PC, or a disk, and then upload it to your class Yahoo! Group.
5. How to use on-line dictionaries.
6. How to use a search engine.
7. How to use some Internet Communication Technologies, such as Yahoo Messenger, and Groupboard to chat with ESL/EFL students and teachers from all over the world.
Activity 1:
A. Creating Your Yahoo e-Mail Account
Directions:
1. Go to Yahoo!Mail
2. Click on Sign up, and then follow the instructions provided for you on that page.
Note: To save time, I suggest that you do this activity at home before you come for this session.
B. Create Your Yahoo Messenger ID
Directions:
1. Go to Yahoo Messengerto download the program.
2. Click on Get it Now to follow the three easy steps to download Yahoo Messenger.
3. Create your Yahoo Messenger, (YM) ID.
4. Send your YM ID in an email to our class Yahoo Group.

Activity 2:
Using Online Dictionaries
1. Go to Unit 1 Vocabulary List
2. Copy a word and then paste it into Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary box.
3. Click on Go to read the definition of a word.
4. Repeat the same process, but this time paste the word into Merriam-Webster Online Thesaurus box, and then click on Go to read the synonym of that word.
Note: Not all English words have synonyms, and in that case you need to provide the definitions only.
Activity 3:
Using Search Engines
Use a search engine, (I recommend Google.com), to find the following information:
1. The definition of the term, Ectotourism! (Find the definition only).
2. Some biographical information about the Beetles, (who are they? what did they do? how did they influenced / affected the world?)
3. Zaid Al-Refai. (Who is he? What did he do?)
